Medical Marijuana in Ohio: How to Get Your Card Easily

Obtaining a medical marijuana card in Ohio isn't as complex as it seems. The Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program (OMMCP) has set a streamlined process that simplifies the journey for every prospective medical marijuana patient. Here's your guide to navigating Ohio's medical marijuana program and earning your medical marijuana card with ease.

Understanding Ohio's Medical Marijuana Law

A Valid Medical Marijuana Card from Ohio

In 2016, Ohio made its way to the list of states that have legalized medical marijuana use. Thanks to the state agencies such as the Ohio Department of Commerce, State Medical Board of Ohio, and Ohio Board of Pharmacy, the state now has an established framework for patients and the Ohio medical cannabis industry association to follow. Despite the positive status, recreational use of marijuana remains illegal in the state.

Medical Conditions that Qualify for a Medical Marijuana Card

There are about 22 conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and inflammatory bowel disease like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Other conditions include Hepatitis C, Parkinson's disease, autism spectrum disorder, sickle cell anemia, spinal cord disease, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and traumatic brain injury. Even seizure disorders, terminal illness, and neurodegenerative diseases are covered under Ohio's program.

Additionally, patients dealing with conditions like opioid use disorder, Tourette syndrome, and a few more, can apply. Recently, the Ohio Medical Board added autism and anxiety to the list. And, medical marijuana has shown positive results in patients with these ailments.

The First Step Towards a Medical Marijuana Card

The initial stage of this journey is getting a doctor's recommendation. The doctor must be certified by the State of Ohio to recommend medical marijuana treatment. A prospective patient must be diagnosed with at least one of the qualifying conditions by the certified physician. The doctor will enter the patient's details into the Ohio Patient Registry, thereby beginning the patient's application process.

The Registration Process

After receiving a medical marijuana recommendation, the next stage involves the patient or a family member completing the registration process. The patient will have to provide their full name, email address, and residency proof, followed by payment of the application fees.

Following registration, the patient will receive an email from the OMMCP with a link to confirm their registration and pay the $50 card fee. The OMMCP then sends out an electronic medical marijuana card.

How to Use Your Medical Marijuana Card

Once you've got your card, you're free to purchase marijuana products from licensed dispensaries. However, the law permits patients to possess only a "90-day supply" of marijuana. You should also be aware of the THC content, as Ohio law has capped the allowable THC content in products.

Where Can You Use Your Medical Marijuana Card?

Ohio law restricts the use of medical marijuana in public places. You're not allowed to consume it in any public park, public library, or any other public place. You can use your medical marijuana in the privacy of your own home.

What Happens If You're Caught Without Your Card?

Under Ohio law, marijuana remains a controlled substance. If you're caught with marijuana but don't have a valid medical marijuana card, you could face criminal charges. However, Ohio does provide an "affirmative defense" clause. This means that if a person is caught with marijuana but can prove they qualify for medical use, they may avoid conviction.
